For a long time now, people want to know what it is they’re putting into their mouths, so home cooking is coming back into fashion. Now with cookbooks and celebrity chefs giving people the confidence to cook complex flavors in the kitchen, it’s a great time to be in the spice making business. It’s amazing the power of a little herb and spice blend can uplift your dish to new levels and make you look like a bonafide gastronomic genius. We use herbs and spices in lots of recipes, even in the ones that don’t ask for any. It’s because these ingredients that are sold are usually concentrated thus they bring an earthy and tantalizing taste in our food; especially meat dishes. Selling a herb and spice product is perhaps one of the more difficult food products because it’s not as mainstream as let’s say rubs and marinades which are in the same group. However, with a little imagination and daring, customers will gravitate toward you.

Whatever kind of herb and or spice you’re selling, focus on making your product easier to identify sitting on the shelf. Remember that you’re going to be surrounded by your rivals, quite literally. Consumers will survey the shelves and what catches their eye will be the first thing they pick up and explore. So if your product has oregano in it, have a picture of raw oregano on the front of the product. The same goes for a spice such as red chilli, picture a raw red chilli on the front. Don’t be alarmed at the potential of people thinking that raw ingredients are inside as the pictures are merely ways to identify the herbs and spice in their raw form. This is because people are used to seeing them at supermarkets whole rather than in a chopped up form inside a herb and spice bottle.

Covering the bottle
Obviously, the bottle cannot be naked, you need to create an artistic impression for your product. Showcase your business logo namely in the upper part of the bottle so your name stands out and is one of the first things customers see when looking at your bottle. You can design your own product labels and have them completely customized so you have a unique face to present to the world. Consider a label that has bright colors and high definition pictures as well as the name in big bold lettering. If you don’t want to cover a lot of the bottle up, you can opt for a smaller label but beware, you’ll have less room to be artistic. That may be something you want to see the product inside can be the main star of the show. However, you may not get noticed either. A large label looks for too industrial as if it’s trying to hide what’s inside and asking customers to rely purely on the picturing.
