Jeffry Lukito has spent much of his life loving chocolate. Having a background in the chocolate industry, he noticed quickly that the chocolate drinks that offered in most cafes was lacking in quality and the sugar that completely dominating the flavor. Then, he decided to create Korte Chocolate Craft by bringing his special chocolate knowledge to the coffee shop scene that brings the most sinful sip of chocolate in a lifetime.

The Rise of Powdered Chocolate

In his home country of Surabaya, Jeffry spent his days crafting using a single-origin chocolate and working to create a range of rich, decadent drinking chocolates made purely from cocoa butter, cocoa mass and a little bit of sugar. Korte is the first brand who served ice/hot chocolate here in Indonesia. I asked him what makes Korte different than any other normal chocolate drinks, he simply answered “Crafted to be brewed”. He explained that he applying the science and art of specialty coffee to chocolate drinks. Different from any normal chocolate drinks that tends to use creamer or additives, Korte is made from the natural ingredients in order to keep and highlight the flavor of chocolate itself.

Jeffry launched Korte in May with “no name”, as he is looking for a name that depicts something yet memorable to ears. In spanish, Korte means “short”and that’s where the name is born. Inspired by expresso which is basically a concentrated pure essence of coffee, Korte is “short” concentrated essence of cocoa. The great thing about Korte is that its name stems for two words and another one is “Courtesan” which is a slank for high class prostitute. In this case, chocolate has the ability to make people addictive and have a huge stereotype of being guilty pleasure. Jeffry was a little hesitant, but then he decided to use it since chocolate has always been controversial.

Jeffry maximize the partnership with coffee shops in Indonesia who aims to serve a better chocolate and the result Korte has been welcomed with huge enthusiasm by the Indonesia cafe scene. Making powdered chocolate has always been a creative process for Jeffry.  “Working with chocolate demands a patience, because you can’t rush it”.  The usage of cocoa powder has resulted a strong, smooth and beautiful intense chocolate flavor.

Jeffry aims to make Korte to be the chocolate culture of Indonesia by spreading the trends and Chocolate drinks is the way to start. Other than partnership, Jeffry also make use of retail shops and from there, he managed to create a bunch of creations he never imagined possible. For instance, the collaboration he did with @cupsandcrumbs is the start of the cold steeped chocolate. He then explain that the online world has given him chance to learn and push him beyond the limit.
